The SNAP drama has been getting intense this week, mostly because tomorrow is the first and people are expecting their precious benefits. I was looking forward to seeing unhinged social media posts about starving adults and children. It looks like I will still see that, but that sadness won’t last as long as I would have liked.
The bad news is that a judge has ordered the Trump administration to release funds to the states so that they can in turn release funds to recipients’ EBT cards. The good news is that the order came in too late today and there is no possible way for benefits to be loaded onto cards in time for tomorrow’s payout.
The administration has until Monday to come up with a game plan to make benefits happen for the millions of lazy people who don’t want to work. That’s both bad and good news. The bad news is that the hunger won’t last for long, but the good news is that copious amounts of people will be going hungry over the weekend and into next week, and yes, that includes children, which doesn’t bother me.
There’s a chance that only partial benefits will be available next week and that will still cause people lots of grief, which also amuses me. The judge admitted that despite her ruling, help won’t arrive by 12:01 tomorrow morning. Good. Even if the misery lasts for only a week, that’s still good enough for me. It should be enough to scare people into getting jobs.
Expecting SNAP people to get jobs? How dare I? People should actually earn their food. Rough concept, I know.
As for today’s decisions, with every ruling comes an appeal, so hopefully the government will file one and leave benefits hanging in the air. Now that would be hilarious!
Given that benefits will not show up tomorrow, and probably not until next Friday, there are problems ahead: people will play the victim. Some people will shoplift, and I foresee numerous arrests and possible officer-involved shootings. If that’s what it takes to stop people from stealing food, then I’m okay with it. I still plan to lock both myself and my food supply down.
Today’s news wasn’t what I wanted to hear. I wanted a total loss of November benefits and perhaps even December as well. But hey, I’ll take what I can get!
