The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the “Mormon” church, is in the news this weekend. First and foremost, Russell M. Nelson, the oldest leader in church history passed away late last night. It’s also in the news for a scarier reason: one of its buildings in Michigan has been attacked.
Indeed, several church members are dead and several more are injured following a mass shooting and a fire. On its surface, this story sounds awful. In reality, however, it’s another example of the church getting its just desserts. I don’t feel one bit sorry for the victims nor the church itself. They’re going to spin this story to make themselves the victims when in reality, the country itself is the victim.
As of the time this article was published, news reports indicated that the alleged shooter is “down,” and that the building is a total loss. At the time of the shooting, Sunday services were in full swing, meaning that hundreds of people were likely inside. Given that, it’s interesting to learn that not many people died. Many more were injured, but they’ll survive.
Given how hateful the church is, I cannot bring myself to have any sympathy. There are many reasons why, not the least of which is the actions of the Albany 2nd Ward in the Albany New York State. That congregation bans bloggers but embraces convicted child molesters who did prison time.
I’m not going to say that the congregation affected by today’s shooting deserved it, but they deserved it for being part of a hateful cult. The Mormon church should be considered a cult, not a religion. Keeping that in mind, there is no way anyone should pity the dead and injured. What happened today was bound to happen and I’m glad that it did. Maybe it’ll take the church down a peg or two.
Some mainstream media outlets are reporting that the site of the meetinghouse is “sacred” and “holy.” I can buy the latter as any church’s property should be considered holy. To them, anyway. But the sacred part? I think they’re confused. I think what they’re referring to is the church’s temples.
Regardless of the fact that I think that what goes on in their temples is wrong on so many levels, its temple sites should be referred to as being sacred. That’s because their most important rituals go on inside temples. I don’t think the media was malicious, I just think that they didn’t have time to do their research properly.
Smoke filled the sky surrounding the church building today and people in the surrounding area were awestruck. In the coming days, I am sure that there will be tears and claims of persecution, but those sentiments are not justified. What happened today was punishment for the church’s evil ways and for that reason, I raise a toast to the person who did it.
