There is some good news to report on this hot and humid Friday evening: President Donald Trump just hammered the last nail into the coffin of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, an entity that financially supports PBS and NPR, things that our country does not need (it is a want) and never really has needed.
According to its website, the CPB has been around pissing away taxpayers’ money since 1967. Trump just pulled its funding, meaning that the CPB itself can no longer operate and that means that, quite soon, PBS and NPR will likewise cease operations because, although they have donors, CPB was the lion’s share of their financial survival.
This move will in time make PBS and NPR no longer operable, but the better news is that local affiliates of these networks will likely no longer be able to support themselves. They may not shut their doors immediately, but in short order, PBS, NPR and local radio and television stations that affiliate with them will shut down.
Sure, these organizations and their affiliates will continue to get donations from people and corporations, but without CPB’s funding, those contributions will not save the now sinking ships. It’s going to be grand watching them all die like dogs.
CNN reports that we’re talking about billions of dollars in funding that is going away. There is no way private donations will do anything other than prolong the organizations’ suffering. Look, life will go on without PBS, NPR and their local affiliates. These things are expensive wants, not needs. Let’s spend the money on things that actually matter!
Yes, I realize that there will be countless job losses, but surely employees who will soon be affected had to have seen the demise of this form of abuse of taxpayers’ monies. I don’t feel one bit sorry for the people who are about to lose their jobs.
To be fair, I realize that local stations are receiving and will still receive donations. Maybe some stations will be able to move on without CPB funding, but most will not. Sooner rather than later, you will see a black screen and hear static.
The demise of CPB, NPR and PBS will be the best thing for our nation. Our taxes shouldn’t have to fund things that are funded. It will be a happy day indeed to see these organizations and their stations die.
