Several times throughout this website, I discuss bunkers and silo condos that people are purchasing to hopefully survive World War III. I got an interesting comment via anonymous email that raised a valid point: though these things are useless during a surprise nuclear attack (unless you have a bunker under your home), there are other purposes that these things could serve.
But of course!
Here are just some other purposes given that they’ll only be useful during a nuclear strike against the United States with advance warning:
- Local/regional civil emergencies, riots, etc.
- Tornados, hurricanes and other such things.
- When and if martial law is ever declared
With proper food storage as well as plentiful amounts of water, one could easily survive any of the above. So, yes, bunkers and silos do have purposes other than temporarily shielding oneself from the initial consequences of a nuclear strike against this country, most likely by Russia, perhaps assisted by China and North Korea.
So, yes, these silos and bunkers could provide shelter and protection during a non-nuclear event, but in reality, unless we have days or at least hours of warning time, they well most likely be useless when World War III starts.
For those whose silos and bunkers do initially shield one from the initial blast and the initial rounds of radiation, such things will be a godsend. But sooner or later, supplies will be depleted and they’ll have no choice but to re-emerge. The question is: is it even worth it?
