Today is another one of the many unnecessary holidays in the United States of America. We have way too many holidays, and today is one of them. What holiday, you might ask, if you’re not American? Well, Happy National BBQ Day!
Today, our banking system, our schools, many of our nation’s employers and a lot of other things shut down for no good reason. Important business must be cast aside and left to sit until tomorrow, and that’s not a good thing. If I were an employer, today would not be a company holiday.
Why should I not be able to conduct banking business just because people want to BBQ? Why should people have to put things on hold for a day just because some people couldn’t simply BBQ over the weekend?
No, there is absolutely no good reason for this at all.
That’s what a lot of assholes have to say today. However, most of us know what today is really about.
Today, we stop to think about those who died serving our country. It doesn’t matter what war they died in, nor does it matter how they died. What does matter is that their service to our country should never be forgotten.
So yes, a few people are going to be inconvenienced today. Some might actually be upset about it, as I snarkily stated above. But they can go to Canada if they don’t like it.
Today, have your BBQ’s. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you pause for a moment and say a prayer for the dead and make sure in your mind that will not be forgotten and, above all else, have even just a quick moment of gratitude for not only those who made the ultimate sacrifice, but for those who who ever served in our military and who died outside of battle.
Without those brave men who died in the name of defense of our country, our way of life would not be possible. Let us never forget that, not only today, but often.
