It’s about damn time!

Exactly one month ago, I wrote about conscription, dumbed down to “the draft.”  The United States, unlike a few other countries, does not require military service of its civilians and, for the moment, that means that there will be no conscription, as has been the case since the unjustified Vietnam War.  The majority of countries do not require service and that’s a shame.

As of this moment, all men 18-25, are required to voluntarily register with the Selective Service, with the possibility of prison time of five years if they do not do so.  Were there to be a draft, that database would be used to call men up.  That, however, is next to impossible because our current military’s numbers are sufficient to go to war if need be.

For the moment, men are not automatically entered into that database.  Right now, our country relies on the honor system though there are ways that they can catch cowardly pansies who refuse to do their part.  And yes, I did register at the time that I was required to.  Come December, however, men will in fact be automatically registered for a possible draft, even though we all know that such a thing will never happen.

Indeed, all men within the age range that I mentioned will find themselves in that database whether they like it or not.  This includes entitled, privileged and cowardly men alongside true patriots who voluntarily register.

If there were to be a desire to bring back the draft, that move would first have to be approved by Congress, which would then be required to amend the Military Selective Service Act. While the foundation is there to re-enact the draft, there are major hoops to jump through to the point that it’s simply not feasible to even think about the draft.

I for one think that this latest move is a wonderful thing.  Actually, I believe that all men and women should be required to serve in a branch of the military of the government’s choosing from age 18 to 20, or upon graduating high school if they are attending same at the age of 18.  The minute their diploma is in their hand, off they go to basic training.  Immediately.  No exceptions.

Two years might seem like a lot to expect of our nation’s youngest adults, but it’s actually a bargain when you think about it.  In North Korea, military service is mandated for up to eight years.  Some countries, like Denmark, require but a year.  Yes, a lot of countries are like the United States in that they also do not require military service, but I think that should change as well.

It’s about time that men are automatically enrolled.  No one, absolutely no one, should be allowed to shirk their patriotic duties.  This new move will put every man (and hopefully woman one day) on equal footing: on the off chance that there is a draft, no one is immune from being called up.  Only a coward would disagree.
