Last month, I wrote about my pledge to not use cash for the entire year of 2025. Every week, I plan to post an article that documents my journey through 2025 using only credit and debit cards, checks (yep! I still have ’em!) and Venmo. No PayPal. No CashApp. None of that. Just what I mentioned.
I am very serious about this goal and I fully intend to see it through.
There will be some slight challenges, however. Yes, giving offerings at my parish will continue by way of checks just as I’ve done all year, because if I pay online, they incur a transaction fee. Besides, giving money that way is easily given by check as I won’t have to run around looking for an ATM.
There will be some potentially huge sacrifices, however. Here are some of the many things I won’t be able to do in 2025:
- No lottery tickets.
- No strip clubs. No, wait, I don’t do that anyway. But if I did, that’d have to go.
- No cash tipping. But everyone makes it easy to tip their servers, delivery people, etc. online. Here’s hoping that 100% of my tips make it into those folks’ pockets.
Those are probably the only ways my life will be impacted by my decision to go absolutely cashless starting in a couple of weeks.
It’s a lofty goal, I know. But I think that it will be an interesting experience. Make sure to check back here every Sunday for the latest updates. And what about you? Do you want to join in and shun paper money, paper that is filthy and contaminated?
